Petrol or Electric. Cylinder, Rotary and Hover Lawn Mowers are all available as electric or petrol driven machines. Electric Lawn Mowers are quieter, lighter, cleaner and easier to handle than their petrol counterparts. However the cable can be a hazard and make it difficult to negotiate large gardens or lawns containing obstacles such as garden ponds or large shrubs. Petrol lawn mowers are usually more powerful and allow you the freedom to wander at will around awkward gardens. They are ideally suited to large gardens and cope better with rough ground. How big is my Lawn? Cylinder Lawn Mowers cut the grass using a scissor
action and are best suited to fine lawns where a high standard of finish
is required. They will provide a cleaner cut than rotary mowers with more
accurate height adjustment giving a superior finish. They are more expensive
to buy and maintain and should not be used on wet grass.
Rotary Mowers. Have horizontal blades that rotate at high speeds to cut the grass They are cheaper to buy and maintain than cylinder lawn mowers and are available with a rear roller (which will create stripes) or with four wheels. The finish obtained using a good quality rotary lawn mower with a roller on an average lawn will be difficult to distinguish from that of a cylinder lawn mower. They can be used when the lawn is damp and will tackle grass of any length.
Hover Mowers. Are similar to rotaries except they 'float' on a cushion of air created by a fan between the blades and the motor. They are consequently light and easy to use and are ideal to negotiate rough ground over and around obstacles and steep banks. Hover mowers are usually relatively cheap and easy to maintain. The quality of finish is usually suited to a utility lawn.
